| Michael Stamper
A truly Canadian artist, Michael Stamper
uses luscious elements such as cherry wood and soapstone to create fluid
designs in both figurative and abstract subjects.
Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, and growing up in
Thornhill, Ontario, Michael describes his various experiences as a
"wonderful opportunity to live and travel" across the country. He
started developing his craft with stone while living in Calgary, Alberta,
and now works out of his own studio near Port Perry in Ontario.
With degrees in Native Studies and Philosophy from
Trent University in Peterborough in Canada, his affinity and emotional
connection with Aboriginal art forms is palpable - yet he brings his own
personal, unmistakable imprint to traditional subjects like inukshuks, bears
and loons.
Michael's creations are infused with tenderness and
energy. His work can evoke calmness and vitality all at once, qualities that
seem to flow from the spirit of the material itself. As Michael puts it, he
"appreciates the natural beauty of the grain in each piece [that]
derives his sculptures". His creations range from
traditionally-inspired but still fresh subjects to meditative, sensuous
forms.
Some of Michael's work is displayed in private
collectors' homes and corporate offices all around the world.
